Question 19

Is there any way to escape punishment and be brought back into God’s favor?

Answer: Yes, to satisfy his justice, God himself, out of mere mercy, reconciles us to himself and delivers us from sin and from the punishment for sin, by a Redeemer.

As you learn this week’s question and answer, you have a great opportunity to meditate on the Gospel (the good news about Jesus Christ). Let me encourage you to think about each aspect of the catechism’s answer—searching the Scriptures to see it plainly God’s word and responding in repentance, faith, obedience, worship, prayer. Use your Bible, a pen, and paper. Here is a breakdown to help facilitate your meditation:

  1. The Gospel is the satisfaction of God’s justice by a Redeemer.
  2. The Gospel is the reconciliation of sinners to God by a Redeemer.

    3. The Gospel is the deliverance of sinners from sin’s power and penalty by a Redeemer.

    4. The Gospel is the mere mercy of God to sinners in a Redeemer.

For each of these truths, consider these questions:

  1. What is meant by this? How is it accomplished in Christ?
  2. Where do I find this taught in Scripture?
  3. What does this teach me about God, man, salvation, mission, evangelism, etc.?
  4. My response to this glorious truth:

Considering writing out a prayer based on this week’s catechism.
